BATTERY DISPOSAL
Hidden Danger. Think before you throw!
Batteries finding their way into our processes are the leading cause of fires at waste sites so we need to make sure we handle them separately. For our safety, please ensure all batteries and devices powered by batteries are recycled correctly.
Small household batteries can be recycled at collection points at local supermarkets or for larger batteries at our Bulwer Avenue facility. If in doubt, please contact us if you have any queries.
Battery types
If you answer yes to any of the below questions, your item probably contains a battery and needs to be disposed of properly, not within mixed bags of waste or skips.
- Does it have a power button, or does it switch ‘on’?
- Is it portable or handheld?
- Does it have a charging port?
- Does it have a screen?
- Does it have the wheelie bin cross logo?
£500 fine
Please ensure you read our Waste Acceptance Criteria before filling a bag. This document clearly defines the waste types that we do not accept. Failure to comply with our Terms and Conditions could result in a £500 fine. If you have any questions regarding the disposal of your waste, please contact our Commercial Team who will be able to assist.
Small household batteries
Typically smaller batteries with a power of 9 volts or less. The most common type is the AA used for household gadgets like remote controls, small toys, and wireless kitchen appliances. Household batteries can be recycled at the Household Waste & Recycling Centre or at Waitrose, Co-Op Grand Marche Stores, Aladdin’s Cave, and all schools.
Lithium batteries
Found in watches, calculators, e-cigarettes, computer tablets, laptops, digital cameras, mobile phones and other small electrical items. Households can drop off any items that contain batteries and the batteries themselves free of charge at the Household Waste & Recycling Centre at Longue Hougue.
